Symbols of Freedom and Flight

Symbols of Freedom and Flight: Why the Monstera Leaf and Frigate Bird Resonate with My Approach to Therapy

Stepping into therapy with me is akin to finding an island sanctuary – a space infused with the calming hues of the ocean and the grounding embrace of the sand. But beyond the aesthetic, two powerful symbols underpin my philosophy: the Monstera leaf and the Frigate bird. These vibrant emblems speak volumes about the journey of healing, growth, and ultimately, “Kanoa” – living free.

The Monstera leaf, with its iconic, naturally occurring splits and holes, is a profound metaphor for the human experience. While seemingly “imperfect” to an unseeing eye, these fenestrations are a testament to the plant’s remarkable adaptability and resilience. Just as the Monstera strategically opens its leaves to allow light and air to pass through, becoming stronger and more vital in the process, therapy encourages us to embrace our own unique imperfections and challenges. I believe that our “splits” – the past hurts, the anxieties, the family dynamics that feel broken – are not flaws to be hidden, but pathways for growth and deeper understanding. Through this process, we, like the Monstera, can not only endure but flourish, transforming perceived vulnerabilities into sources of unique strength and beauty. It’s a vibrant reminder that even when life feels fragmented, there is an inherent design for wholeness and abundance within us.

Soaring effortlessly above the ocean, the Frigate bird embodies a different, yet equally compelling, aspect of freedom. Known as a master of the skies, these magnificent birds possess unparalleled endurance, capable of gliding for weeks without touching land. This incredible ability to transcend limitations and navigate vast expanses of air symbolizes the liberation that Brian aims to help his clients achieve. In therapy, individuals often feel weighed down by burdens, trapped by circumstances, or limited by their perspectives. The Frigate bird, with its expansive wings and powerful flight, represents the potential to rise above these challenges. It’s a testament to the strength and resilience we can cultivate to navigate life’s storms with grace and purpose, to truly “soar” into a life of self-determination and renewed spirit.

Together, the grounding resilience of the Monstera leaf and the boundless freedom of the Frigate bird beautifully articulate my therapeutic vision. They reflect a practice where clients are not just heard, but seen in their full potential – empowered to embrace their unique stories, navigate complexities with newfound strength, and ultimately, find their authentic path to living free.

“Ben Storm is living the perfect life in Texas at a children’s Home. Giant cottonwood, elm, and poplar trees grow along the irrigation canals that run through the grounds and border the Home. Wide and long alfalfa and cotton fields beckon nearby. Suddenly his entire source of stability and friendships are ripped away when he is told he will be moving to Southern California. After a few months his relatives turn him over to a man they say is his dad. He soon finds himself living in a tenuous situation with a father he has never known. Unable to forge the years spent apart into a relationship due to his dad’s chemical abuse and dependency, Ben makes the difficult decision to leave the household and takes to the streets. In the course of attempting to survive, he eventually finds solace and safety in the most unlikely of places.”
